ms CartPro

Research

We aim at developing a production system for cartilage grafts from adult mesenchymal stem cells as well as the establishment of protocols of stem cell differentiation in the bioreactor.

The MS CartPro cooperative project is structured  in 3 project groups (PB):

PB 1  Bioreactor group
The Bioreactor group provides isolated ovine and human stem cell populations to the project partners and characterises these stem cell populations with bioanalytical methods. The group develops the GMP compliant bioreactor by integrating the monitoring components of the Biophysics group. In particular, the Bioreactor group conducts the experiments to develop and validate optimised cultivation protocols.

PB 2  Biophysics group
The Biophysics group develops innovative technologies for non-invasive cell sorting (MOS), for the non-invasive online monitoring of the cell cultures on single-cell level (combined PSAM and CLSM) and for the multi-parametric quality control of the produced grafts. In cooperation with the Bioreactor group these newly developed technologies will be integrated into the production system.

PB 3  Bioinformatics group
The Bioinformatics group develops image processing software which allows to automatically reconstruct and characterise the organisation of stem cell cultures from image series. Furthermore, based on the acquired data the group develops a computer model of lineage specification and differentiation of populations of MSCs. The results of the modeling are expected to optimise the production regime of the bioreactor.
